Spring Break in Whistler

9th January, 2014

Spending Spring Break in Whistler is a great way to keep the family entertained and spend some quality time together.

Skating at Olympic PlazaThe Village of Whistler is a magical place even after the lights go down, from 11am – 9pm you can skate for free right in the heart of the Olympic Plaza. Don’t worry about packing your skates as there are rentals for only $5. There are also a number of lakes around town and when the weather is right, you can go out and hopefully join in a game of Canada’s favorite sport, shinny hockey.

If adrenaline is more up your alley there are a number of options to quench that thirst. Ever wondered what it is would feel like being an Olympian racing down the bobsleigh track? Wonder no more, the Whistler Sliding Center has a Bobsleigh Ride Experience where you and two others can race down the track driven by a professional pilot at speeds of over 125kms/hr. Or maybe you are more of the solo adrenalin sport type, in that case you can go down the track head first in the Skeleton Slide Experience where you reach speeds of 100kms/hr or you can go and throw yourself off a 160 foot bridge over the Cheakamus River.

We all know the main attraction here in Whistler is the skiing so we have come up with a few ideas to enhance your days. Whistler Blackcomb ski school is a great way to dust off your skis, there is a lesson program tailored to skiers of any ability and age. For the more extreme skiers why not give catskiing or heliskiing a try, there is over 432,000 acres of big mountain terrain that every skier or boarder must experience at least once in their lifetime. The terrain includes 173 glaciers and 475 runs in an area that is 50 times the size of Whistler Blackcomb.

For all of you early risers that want to beat the crowds take advantage of Fresh Tracks Breakfast where you head up Whistler to enjoy a buffet breakfast at the Roundhouse Lodge and access to the fresh snow before anyone else.

After your day on the slopes you can always take the kids tubing which is located at midstation on Blackcomb or take in the Fire and Ice Show which takes place every Sunday night in Skiers Plaza. See a spectacular display or skiers and snowboarders jumping and flipping through a ring of fire, where else can you see that on a Sunday night.

Whistler also has activities for those looking for more of a relaxing getaway. The Scandinave Spa has everything from a relaxing massage to a soak in their 20,000 square foot outdoor baths consisting of hot, cold and relaxation stations. There is also a movie theater right in the heart of the village that has 8 screens showing all the new releases. Maybe art is your thing; if so don’t forget to check out the art gallery located right at the Crystal Lodge featuring one of our local Vancouver artists.
